The ABCs of Eating Healthy On The Go!

Always Be Prepared

Ever been stuck in traffic with a hungry 5 year old? Then you know it pays to be prepared. Keep easy to grab snacks in the glove compartment of your car and in your purse or diaper bag for when you are on the go. Here are some healthy suggestions.

  • Granola bars
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Dried fruit
  • Whole wheat pretzels and crackers
  • Trail mix
  • Bite size cereal such as Bran Chex, Cheerios, or Frosted Mini-Wheats

It also pays to be prepared at home. Always have ready-to-eat foods prepared for a child to grab themselves, such as cut up fruit and vegetables, yogurt, and cheese cubes. Keep items on a shelf in the refrigerator or on a low counter top or table. This ensures items can be reached by small children.

Beware of the Fast Food Trap

I know, it is hard, but try to limit fast food to no more than 2 times per week. While the options have improved over the years, fast food still contains more calories, fat, sodium and sugar and less fruits, vegetables and whole grains than a meal at home. When you have to splurge, here are some tips for making it better.

  • Share a meal with another family member.
  • Don’t super size, no matter how great the deal!
  • Balance out the meal; order a small burger with a fruit cup instead of the fries.
  • Don’t be fooled by a salad, many have just as many if not more fat and calories as a burger and fries.
  • Pay attention to the nutrition information if posted, this may make you rethink some of your options.
  • Watch your beverages. Order water or diet soda with lemon.

Convenience Foods Can Be Healthy

Most grocery stores offer an array of convenience foods; some healthy, some not. Be on the look out for reduced sodium and low fat entrees and items with 5 grams of fiber or more. Also, if your budget allows, buy the pre-washed, pre-cut vegetables that are ready to be throw into a casserole or turned into a quick stir-fry. If not, regular frozen fruits and vegetables are ready to use and can be prepared in minutes.
