School is almost out and summer is around the corner. Here come long, hot days at the pool, the beach or the park. With the temperature rising fast, it is important to make sure your active kids are getting enough fluids. Try these summer tips to avoid dehydration.

School is almost out and summer is around the corner. Here come long, hot days at the pool, the beach or the park. With the temperature rising fast, it is important to make sure your active kids are getting enough fluids. Try these summer tips to avoid dehydration:

  • Encourage fluids before, during and after activity.
  • For every 20 minutes of activity a 90 lb child should get about 5 oz of fluid.
  • Try to schedule outdoor activities during the coolest parts of the day, like the in the morning or evening.
  • Dress your children in light colored, lightweight clothing that gives their skin room to breathe and for sweat to evaporate.
  • Try freezing water bottles or sports drink overnight to keep them cold during the day.
